The escapees find life outside Grace Field House is filled with dangers, but under the leadership of Emma and Ray, they become determined to return to free their remaining siblings, along with children from the other Farms. Emma and Ray then decide to escape with some of their older siblings, leaving the younger children behind. Emma and Norman plan with Ray to escape from Grace Field House with the children, but Norman is taken off to be "adopted".
At the gate, they find Conny dead and discover the truth about their existence in this idyllic orphanage – to be raised as meat for demons. One night, a girl named Conny is sent away to be "adopted", but Emma and Norman follow with her favorite stuffed animal toy. The orphans are allowed complete freedom, except to venture beyond the perimeter wall or gate which separate the house from the outside world. Their education is seen as an important part of their development, and Emma with her two best friends Norman and Ray, always excel in the regular exams. They lead an idyllic life, with plentiful food, plush beds, clean clothes, games and the love of their "Mom", Isabella. The bright and cheerful Emma is an 11-year-old orphan living in Grace Field House, a self-contained orphanage housing her and 37 other orphans. They believed that they were orphans and once they reached a certain age or intelligence, they would be taken out for adoption, but were fed to high-ranking demons instead. These children had identifying numbers tattooed on them and had no knowledge of the outside world. In the demon world, a special breeding program was set up under the guise of orphanages there, a human "Mother" would oversee the children to make sure they grew up as intelligent as possible. By eating humans, demons take on their attributes which prevent them from degenerating into mindless monsters. "The Promise" was an agreement where each would live in their own separate "worlds": the human world, free from the threat of demons and the demon world, where human breeding farms were set up to provide food for the demons. She’s with Fourth Wall Management and Hansen Jacobson.It is the year 2045, and over 1000 years after an agreement called "The Promise" was made to end a long war between humans and demons. She’s also contributed to the upcoming Sony animated feature Vivo. Malloy, meanwhile, is Rothman’s former assistant and wrote on Spiderverse. He’s also with UTA and Ziffren Brittenham. Rothman, meanwhile, co-wrote and co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and counts 22 Jump Street, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping among his credits. He’s repped by UTA, Luber/Roklin and Ziffren Brittenham. The former Heroes star’s producing credits also include Mega Man and Edge of Tomorrow. Oka, meanwhile, previously teamed with Lee and Vertigo and exec produced Death Note and its forthcoming sequel.
On the feature side, Vertigo’s credits include New Line’s It franchise, Netflix’s Oka and the Death Note films as well as the Lego Movie franchise.
The latter series is exec produced by Sony Pictures Television, where Lee’s Vertigo imprint previously had an overall deal. The Promised Land is the latest Vertigo title to come to life at Amazon and joins Lena Waithe-produced horror anthology Them, which was picked up two years ago with a two-season order. The Japanese manga series The Promised Land has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine published by Shueisha. Once the truth is discovered, they begin to plan an escape to save all of the children. The series is based on the beloved title by Kaiu Shirai and illustrator Posuka Demizu and revolves around a group of the smartest kids at a seemingly idyllic orphanage who uncover its dark truth when they break a rule to never leave the orphanage grounds. Rothman will also direct the Fox 21 project. Malloy will pen the script and exec produce alongside Rothman and Oka as well as Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon. Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse duo Rodney Rothman and Meghan Malloy are teaming with Masi Oka to adapt the popular manga title. The retail giant/streamer is teaming with Vertigo to adapt the title as a live-action scripted event series. Amazon is bringing beloved Vertigo manga series The Promised Neverland to life.
